This year, I was honored to be selected among many entrants to participate in the annual Battle of the Bay Art Show held during the Oakland Athletics vs. San Francisco Giants "Bay Bridge Series." My entry to the show is in honor of the awesome 3rd and 1st basemen on the A's, both named Matt! Matt Chapman and Matt Olson are a virtually unstoppable combo on both offense and defense, so I wanted to combine my love of the A's and my fondness for themed design. This was a fun event, and I hope to participate again next season!
(Update: As of the final day of the Bay Series, I was excited to learn that my framed print was sold to a fan! Proceeds will be split between myself and the A's & Giants' Community Funds!)
So yeah, I finally joined the 2010s and hopped onto Instragram. My Instagram handle is @funkybatdraws For now, I am focusing on sharing my various bat-related doodles on IG, but plan to expand the range of content as I finish more of my larger-scale projects. Check it out for Instagram-exclusive images!
These new sticker designs pay tribute to my favorite new sci-fi show of the past couple of years, Seth MacFarlane's The Orville! After being sorely disappointed by the tone, storytelling, and design choices in the lamentable Star Trek: Discovery series, The Orville has been a welcome and familiar-feeling respite from all the grimdark and bad drama. Seth and his team have captured the look & feel of the Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager era, but found new angles on familiar Trek tropes. It's also nice to see a comedic angle to a space opera, a genre that often takes itself too seriously.
This second design is a call to action for all Orville fans who miss Lt. Alara Kitan as much as I do! Her replacement (Talla) is great in her own way, but I hope Alara returns to the show in the coming season(s). #bringbackalara
These Stickers and Buttons will be for sale at my booth at WonderCon in Anaheim, CA, March 29th-31st!
It occurred to me, as I've watched the continuous disaster I call the "Trumpocalypse", that the dirty trickster Roger Stone reminded me of someone in fiction. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but his impish glee at causing chaos, with seemingly no agenda (other than helping the right wing and pissing off anyone with a sense of decency) all felt very familiar.
Just in time for WonderCon 2018, is the debut of my first button designs! And these two are quite the pair. "Fox" Mulder makes his premiere in the spotlight, and "Starbuck" Dana Scully keeps going with some strong java (none of that stale FBI breakroom instant coffee crap!)
As for my inspiration; Fox's design is probably self-explanatory, but for those of you wondering about Scully's reference, it's a nod to X-Files super-fans - Dana's father's pet name for her was "Starbuck."
This pair, along with my "Mister Trump" design, will all be available in small and large buttons at WonderCon 2018 in Anaheim, CA, March 23rd-25th. See you there!
MR. TRUMP POISON STICKER - If you're interested in buying stickers of "Mr. Trump", they're now on sale! 10 stickers for $5.00, or 50 for $20!. To purchase, PayPal me at kevinnw@hotmail.com !
Some of you who grew up in the 70s or 80s probably remember the character on stickers they used to give out for parents to stick onto containers for cleaners, paint, & other potentially deadly chemicals to prevent kids from eating/drinking them. His name was Mr. Yuk, and this ad was how they trained all us kids to recognize and avoid these deadly solvents:
Sadly, in 2017 The United States now has a toxic President, a person who is in every way, shape and form a toxin unto himself and everyone he comes into contact with. In the spirit of Mr. Yuk, I introduce to you my sticker for "Mr. Trump!"
Here's a brand-new vintage-style mascot I created for a client: Apple Boy B-B-Q! I like to think of him as the love child of Bob's Big Boy and a down-home country girl. Specially smoked BBQ meats are his specialty!
